Billing Specialist

Position Summary: Performs functions that result in timely, accurate billing and effective collection practices for all operations within the organization. 


Essential Responsibilities: 

Prepare private pay Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance billings and create electronic or paper file for skilled nursing facility billing.

Communicate with residents and responsible parties regarding financial ability to pay for services and resources available.

Input data for residents regarding dates of service, pay sources, and services provided. 

Provide accurate and timely information for billing and insurance matters to residents and family members. 

Maintain, compile, and verify the accuracy and completeness of accounts receivable data. 

Create and maintain financial files and data for current and former residents.

Compile and prepare regular and special accounting reports.

Review accounts receivable weekly and perform collection activities related to outstanding balances.

Assist with budgeting, year-end audits, and year-end cost reports related to revenue and accounts receivable. 

Post resident payments to account; import electronic remittance advices.

Monitor and assist residents through Medicaid spend-down process and application for Medicaid eligibility. 

  • Assumes all other position related responsibilities as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively discuss financial matters with residents and responsible parties.

In depth knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid databases and billing regulations for skilled nursing facilities.

Advanced keyboarding, word processing, and spreadsheet software skills. 

Advanced knowledge of billing computer applications and software. 

Effective organizational skills; must be attentive to detail.

Prior experience in collections, including letter, telephone calls, meetings, filing liens, etc.

Operate standard office equipment including computer, fax machine, copy machine, telephone, etc.

Displays a professional and business appropriate demeanor when meeting with families and/or residents.



Education, Training, Experience:

High school diploma or successful completion of GED test.

Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration. 

A minimum of two (2) years medical billing or general accounting experience preferred.

Nonessential Responsibilities:

Establish and maintain effective work relationships with staff, management, residents, Board of Trustee, resident’s families, and the public.

Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of Resthaven and its residents and employees.

Practice the highest standards of ethics, honesty, and accuracy.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
