In October 2021, we launched our new ‘Food Club & Opportunity Hub’ to expand efficient, impactful healthy food assistance with the on-site integration of other pathway programs. More recently, we announced a partnership with Dwelling Place to help address the affordable housing crisis here in Holland. In July 2023, we publicly launched our expansion of Lakeshore Food Rescue ( www.lakeshorefoodrescue.org ).


Organizational budget: $9M-10M (inclusive of $5M in-kind support)

Position Details Position Type: Part-time Internship; 10-12 hours per week

Overtime Status: Non-exempt

Reports To: Manager, Food Club

Direct Reports: None

Department: Food Access (Food Club, HEAL)

Primary Location: Food Club & Opportunity Hub

Position Term: May 2026 - August 2026

Compensation & Benefits: $13.73 per hour


Summary Are you interested in learning more about food access, food systems and how local food gets connected to neighbors who need it? This position offers hands-on experience working directly with our Food Club team to operate an innovative food access program focused on dignity and choice that serves over 1,500 households each month.


The Food Club Intern is primarily responsible for ensuring efficient and effective day to day Food Club operations by leading volunteers, maintaining clean and organized food areas, and providing excellent customer service during member shopping hours. This position will provide real world experience working in a dynamic and innovative nonprofit environment.


Responsibilities & Essential Duties 

  • Provide outstanding member service during Food Club shopping hours.
  • Work collaboratively with a cross functional team to ensure highest member service.
  • Ensure the work area is clean and organized for daily volunteer and staff use.
  • Work alongside and lead daily volunteer groups and individually scheduled shifts. 
  • Assist volunteers at the Checkout Station and fill in as needed. 
  • Work to ensure an efficient delivery process from food deliveries and other food donors.
  • Ensure food is properly stored in a timely and food safe manner (training for this role includes ServSafe or other food handling certification).
  • Ensure produce, dairy, and frozen products are consistently stocked and meet daily standards.
  • Participate in and lead daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of work areas.
  • Work independently to execute opening and closing procedures of the Food Club store.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received 

  • Specific Direction: Receives detailed work instructions or guidance for performing repetitive tasks. Supervisor monitors progress and provides feedback or correction as needed to ensure that tasks are completed according to expectations.

Education & Experience 

  • High School Diploma required. Some college preferred.
  • No prior experience required 
  • ServSafe Certification preferred, or willingness to obtain in onboarding
  • Basic conversational Spanish proficiency desired

Qualifications 

  • Passionate about promoting healthy food access.
  • Ability to prioritize member experience and manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Strong work ethic, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity in Google Workspace, and ability to use an Inventory and point of sale (POS) system preferred.

  • Occasionally operate computer and general office machines
  • Frequently operate pallet jacks, cardboard baler
  • Continuously ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds

Other Factors 

  • Access to consistent and reliable transportation.
  • Evening hours regularly, on a pre-scheduled basis
  • Weekend hours regularly, on a pre-scheduled basis
