Job Description

Hope College is seeking a motivated, dependable Transportation Assistant/Driver who is interested in professional growth. The right candidate will have the opportunity to advance into a Transportation Manager role as part of a planned leadership transition. Candidates with leadership ambition and a desire to take on greater responsibility are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Transportation Services Assistant is responsible for supporting the daily functions of the Transportation Department as well as driving a Hope College bus for events on a regular basis.

Daily activities include but are not limited to assisting with: overseeing and training student and non-student employees, assisting with scheduling maintenance of vehicles, reservations of college vehicles, and coordinating the day to day operations of the department.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in managing both department and student employees including scheduling, hiring, workload planning, training and communication.
  • Assist with the Campus Shuttle services (evening, airport and Grocery Grab).
  • Streamline data collection and input for all aspects of the Transportation Garage (driver records, vehicle records, DOT documentation, MDEQ documentation, training records, etc).
  • Help maintain regular communication with the Transportation Team and maintain consistent accountability with drivers.
  • Assist in coordinating off campus trips with various departments and Transportation Coordinator.
  • Fill in as a driver whenever needed.
  • Train and test drivers as required per college and DOT policies.
     

Qualifications

  • Must have valid Michigan driver’s and CDL Class B licenses and have a good driving record
  • High School Diploma, some college preferred
  • Must work as a team member and relate well to students and others within the academic environment
  • Must be trained to drive and test drivers to drive 12 passenger vans and have a good driving record and valid driver’s license
  • 5 years minimum experience in the transportation/driving field
  • Learn and assist with the Event Management System (EMS) software used for college vehicle reservations
  • Use computer systems and software to document work performed
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Customer oriented
  • Punctual and time conscious
  • Leadership experience or demonstrated leadership potential – readiness and willingness to grow into supervisory and managerial responsibilities

Physical Demands

This position requires remaining in a sitting or standing position for frequent periods of time; uses office machinery such as a computers, printers, copy machines; Occasionally involves moving items over 10 pounds; frequently will move between different offices/workspaces/buildings; and requires effective communication abilities.
